The Benefits of Web Based Training
The Paradigm Shift in Technical Education

"Drinking out of a fire hose." That is the way many people feel about technical training such as Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) courses. Hour after hour, day after day, the torrent of facts flow. After a while, a sort of numbness sets in. You tell yourself it will be over soon but you know it's not really true. Once the class ends, you will still need to study for many nights and weekends before you think you are ready to take the certification exam.

This is the current paradigm in technical training, and the way we have been learning for hundreds of years--sitting in a classroom and listening to an instructor "teach" and then going home to "learn" the material. Here is what's really going on: Most educators will agree that after intensive training courses like these, the average student retains about 10% of the course material. The other 90% we either learn on the job or at home studying but, without instructor support, a network for hands on practice and some way of "knowing when" we are ready to take the exam. Sound familiar?

As an example, let's say you want to get your CNA (Certified NetWare Administrator). This is a five day course and costs approximately $1,200. Your total time investment is roughly 45 hours, 8 hours of class per day, plus drive time and lunches. At the end of the course, you will have learned roughly 10% of what you need to know to pass the exam. And, on average, you will need to invest an additional 40 hours studying to learn the rest of the material. This means your total time investment is about 85 hours to prepare for this one exam. And, if you want your CNE, there are 6 more sessions like this one.

If you are only learning 10% of what you need to know from a classroom based course, then what are you really getting for your $1,200, 45 hour investment? Well, you also get a good overview of the course topics and you get the class material to take home with you, so you can learn the rest. But, that's about it! So, if that's all students are getting for their time and money, why are people still taking classroom based courses? That's right. Because, there really was not a better alternative until the advent of online training.

Now, you can use a directed, paced, online training program which was designed to support you where you need it most--outside of the classroom. It eliminates the less efficient classroom time which cuts your personal time investment in half and online training costs about 60% less than the classroom alternative too. You can also choose when and where you want to learn, so you can truly set your own schedule. And, online training will provide you with all the information you will need to pass the exam including instructor support, a live online network (with administrative rights) for hands on experience, and skills assessment and testing software which will tell you when you are ready to take the exam.

The substantial benefits of online training are the driving forces behind the paradigm shift in technical training and are forever changing the way we think about learning.
